Dennis Gray is an Adjunct Professor at the National Drug Research Institute at Curtin University where he was previously Deputy Director (2002–2018) and where he led the Aboriginal Research Program for 26 years (1992–2018) – a program with an emphasis on collaborative research providing practical benefits to Aboriginal communities.

His research has focused upon: the social determinants of harmful alcohol and other drug (AOD) use; Aboriginal AOD policy issues; provision of AOD preventive and treatment services; enhancement of the management of AOD-related problems in Aboriginal community-controlled health services; the effectiveness of alcohol supply control measures; and, evaluation of service provision. Alone and with colleagues in these areas he has: conducted 98 research projects; published 138 journal articles, book chapters and technical reports; and given 148 presentations on the research (a third of these specifically to Aboriginal target audiences). This work has included an emphasis on building the capacity of Aboriginal people and organisations to conduct research and deliver services.

This research has had demonstrable outcomes at the national, state/territory and regional/local levels. These outcomes include: contributions to the National Strategic Framework for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and the National Drug Strategy Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples Complementary Action Plan; development of strategies and allocation of funding to address the prevention of hepatitis C in Western Australia and alcohol misuse in the Northern Territory, and COAG funding allocations in Queensland; and enhancement of community interventions in Perth, Kununurra, Port Hedland, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs.

He has been, and continues to be, a consultant on Aboriginal AOD and health issues to various community-controlled organisations and government agencies, including Queensland Aboriginal and Islander Health Council, Aboriginal Drug and Alcohol Council (SA), Central Australian Aboriginal Congress, Tangentyere Council, the Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Service Council, the Australian Government Department of Health, the Northern Territory Department of Health and Community Services, and the Western Australian Health Department. From 2005 to 2014 he was a member of the National Indigenous Drug and Alcohol Committee, which was then the peak advisory body to the Australian Government Indigenous alcohol and other drug issues.

In 2006 his research team was awarded the National Alcohol and Drug Award for Excellence in Research and a Curtin University Vice Chancellors Award for Excellence, and in 2010 – in recognition of his significant contribution to the AOD field – he was named on the National Drug and Alcohol Honour Roll.
