Professor Stockwell was previously Director of NDRI and is now Professor and Director at the Centre for Addictions Research of British Colombia (CARBC) at the University of Victoria in Canada. Professor Stockwell is acknowledged – both nationally and internationally – as an expert on the prevention of alcohol related harms.

Professor Stockwell's publications have appeared in a large number of journals including British Journal of Addiction (now Addiction), British Journal of Psychiatry, Drug and Alcohol Review, Accident Analysis and Prevention, Journal of Studies on Alcohol, Alcohol and Alcoholism, Medical Journal of Australia, British Medical Journal and the Australian Journal of Public Health.

He has undertaken research for organisations such as the Department of Health (UK), Health Departments of several Australian states/territories, the Commonwealth Department of Health and Family Services, the National Mental Health and Research Council, the WA Health Promotion Foundation, the Traffic Board of WA, the World Health Organization and the United Nations Drug Control Program. He is a Director of the Alcohol Education and Research Foundation, a member of the Board of the Drug and Alcohol Office of WA, of the National Expert Advisory Committee on Alcohol and the WHO Alcohol Policy Strategy Committee.
