As Program Leader of the Prevention and Early Intervention (PEI) team at the National Drug Research Institute (NDRI) Nyanda leads an internationally recognized research program which aims to reduce risky drug use and harm, with an emphasis on young people, and during preconception/pregnancy. Nyanda’s research is noted for its innovation in addressing gaps in knowledge, and incorporating consumers’ needs and experiences to ensure that her research is meaningful and resonates with consumers, professional implementers and policy makers. Nyanda has professional interest is the translational application of research to policy and practice and currently (Nov 2023) 169 policy incorporate her work (x72 International; x64 National, x33 State) (Scopus, Overton).

Nyanda’s most significant research contributions stem directly from this focus as Principle Investigator of the multi award winning School Health and Alcohol Education Project (SHAHRP) (see shahrp.info) consisting of 6 studies across the breadth of intervention research: formative, efficacy (RCT), replication (RCT x4), dissemination, redevelopment, and long-term follow-up feasibility (x6 studies, x4 Cat 1 funding). The SHAHRP Randomised Controlled Trial was world first in assessing the behavioural impact of a harm reduction approach to alcohol education in schools, a change in paradigm from the abstinence-based approach which achieved limited behavioural impact and dominated the field for many decades. The SHAHRP study results were first to report significant reductions in total alcohol consumption, risky drinking, and the harms that young people experience in alcohol use situations, and was particularly effective with early risky drinkers. This study has made a world-leading contribution to the science and evidence-basis in the school drug education field.

From a research perspective, the critical behavioural findings of SHAHRP and the SHAHRP intervention development model have made an important contribution to the science and evidence-basis in the field affording Nyanda peer recognition as a world leader in this area (Expertscape top 0.41%). SHAHRP has been identified in national and international reviews as making a major contribution to the advancement of knowledge, and in setting and maintaining new directions in the international research community. This contribution is further identified in four replications of the SHAHRP Randomised Controlled Trial; identification in Cochrane reviews; over 2000+ citations of the key study publications which have over 3.7 times world average citation rate, are in the top 1% policy cited papers and 33% involve international partnerships (Nyanda 100% first or senior author); invitations to speak at international conferences; requests by international universities to conduct courses in school drug education research, program development and policy/practice translation as a Science Without Borders Fellow (x3).

Nyanda, has Principle Investigator of the SHAHRP studies, has been invited CI on replications including international collaborations in 7 countries with 10 partners (2011-2027) resulting in invitations as keynote speaker (x7 in 5 countries) (e.g. Royal Society of Medicine, UK; International Congress of Alcohol, Brazil), and international Visiting Fellow (x3) where Nyanda led SHAHRP cultural adaptations, research training and translational application. Nationally, Nyanda has been invited CI to provide expertise on collaborations (2011-2026) which use the SHAHRP model, intervention and/or tools resulting in funding (x 6, Cat 1 x8 inc. ARC/NHMRC, industry x6, philanthropic x1) and publications (77).

The strength of Nyanda’s research is in her global impact on the research field and in the translation of her research to policy and practice. As a result of this behavioural impact, SHAHRP has reframed alcohol education. SHAHRP is adopted in >2500 organisations from 54 countries across multiple diverse sectors (e.g. education, health, social, military, sport). Recent adoptions include delivery of SHAHRP to 76000 students in UK annually, adoption in the tertiary sector where over 50 universities incorporate SHAHRP in their pre-service training to teachers, by Headspace in its program for young adults, and in Aboriginal communities. SHAHRP has been recognised in national impact assessments as having an outstanding impact as a result of SHAHRP research being adopted in 77 policies (x25 Australia, x52 international) (current at Nov 2023), including for the WHO (x6); the UN; and Australian and multiple international Governments.

Nyanda’s SHAHRP work has been awarded international (x2) and national research (x4) including the National Drug and Alcohol Award for ‘Excellence in Research’ and ‘Excellence in Prevention and Community Education’ (2013) the premier National Drug and Alcohol award in Australia, judged by a panel of leading experts, which she was invited to join in 2019.

Nyanda has recieved invitations as expert advisor for over 20 policy and practice organisations, including WHO (x5), the Australian Department of Health and Aging, Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (x9), and to inform the National Curriculum. The validated SHAHRP measurement tools are used globally (>50), including by the WHO, the University of Cambridge (QS 2nd) in under-resourced and European countries. These tools have been incorporated in the biennial National Drug Strategy Household Survey, the premier source of alcohol and other drug data in Australia. The SHAHRP tools have also been a conduit to multiple research collaborations as CI or expert advisor on 20+ research studies, including international replications of SHAHRP RCTs.

The behavioural effect of SHAHRP, its long term adoption by the research field, and by policy and practice has demonstrated scalability across sectors. SHAHRP has a significant impact on health with extensive reach, across time.

Nyanda initiated and maintains the SHAHRP website (shahrp.info) which averages 300 visits per month and over 200 practice adoptions in a range of organisations per annum.

Nyanda initiated research to reduce alcohol and drug use during the preconception/pregnancy at NDRI and is currently the leading international researcher on preventive, intervention research, in contrast to the diagnostic and treatment orientation of the field. Her international position is exampled through her initiation and leadership of the International Research Consortium (established 2012), a collaborative network of knowledge exchange and co-creation and her reviews of international policies, for example, review of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Guidelines for the Identification and Management of Substance Use and Substance Use Disorders in Pregnancy, and is a provider of foundational knowledge to international policy (25 citations) including multiple citations in WHO policy documents and in UK Government Parliament Briefing Notes. Nyanda has provided 30 policy responses to inform national policy leading to citations in the Australian guidelines to reduce health risks from drinking alcohol the primary policy document guiding the AOD field in Australia, and as an invited expert to the Australian Senate Standing Committee Inquiry into Effective Approaches to Prevention, Diagnosis and Support for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders.

Relative to opportunity, Nyanda has participated in attracting external research income in excess of $22.4 million involving a range of research programs focusing on the education of young people and adults to reduce alcohol and other drug related harm. Nyanda has written over 200+ scientific publications (60%+ as first/senior author) with nearly 3000 citations, written policy submissions which are critical for policy and practice impact in her field (x2 international, x15 national), has been an invited key note speaker at international conferences, invited international visiting fellow, and sits on several national advisory committees.

Nyanda is a member of NDRI's Leadership Group, is a NDRI Program Leader, is a Curtin University Human Research Ethics Committee reviewer and a member of the Faculty of Health Sciences Mentor Program. She is the NDRI Director of Graduate Studies at the Faculty of Health Sciences Research Training Committee, and is Chair of the NDRI Graduate Studies Committee. Nyanda has written an institute-wide initiative documenting all University HDR processes and procedures as a detailed working guide for NDRI students and supervisors. She has been responsibility for executive approvals at the Faculty level, and has written exemplars for HDR processes and has actively contributed to University level HDR planning, which recently included the redevelopment of University-wide HDR processes/procedures, development of the University HDR COVID-19 response, and initiation of Aboriginal HDR support structure. Nyanda has supervised five undergraduate placement students since 2020 and one competitive undergraduate scholarship student.

Multidisciplinary and global collaborations are a cornerstone of Nyanda's success. In ensuring use and uptake of her research Nyanda has built long standing international collaborations in six countries. She works with teams in the United Kingdom and Brazil to support and mentor staff in the replication of my SHAHRP RCT. These collaborations have result in joint successful funding proposals (x4), publications, and invitations as keynote presenter (including at the prestigious Royal Society of Medicine, London, and the International Congress of Alcohol and Other Drugs). She has been invited as a Science Without Borders Visiting Fellow on three occasions to develop new research initiatives, to provide training on intervention research and to advise on the use of SHAHRP in policy and practice. Nyanda initiated and leads the International Research Consortium (2012 – current), an ongoing collaborative network comprising leading researcher from UK, Canada, Hungary and Australia. The aim of this consortium is to develop and progress international research in the field and has resulted in grant submissions and policy initiatives. Nyanda's national collaborations stem from recognition of her planned and unique contribution to the field. Long term national collaborations with the University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales have resulted in funding (category 1 x8, industry x7 and philanthropic x 1) and publications (64 to date).

Other long standing and productive collaborations include with the Australian Fatherhood Research Consortium (2017 - current) where Nyanda is a member on the Intervention Research, Systematic Review, and Data and Analysis Groups resulting in national studies and publications; and her collaboration focusing on prevention of alcohol and drug exposed pregnancies to create a multidisciplinary partnership and comprehensive approach in this research focus in Australia.

Nyanda has mentored 3 international teams (UK x2, Brazil) for extended periods as they culturally adapted and replicated the SHAHRP RCT, and during translation to policy and practice. She manages 6 current research staff and, relative to opportunity, has supervised three PhD student's to completion, two who is now industry employed, and two Masters students, one academic employed and one industry employed. Nyanda is currently primary supervisor of two PhD students and co-supervisor of another, Chair of Thesis Committee to 10+ students, and expert adviser to three external PhDs (international x1). Nyanda is proactive in seeking HDR students and has supervised one undergraduate scholarship student who subsequently enrolled as an NDRI HDR student. She also regularly volunteers as an undergraduate placement supervisor to inspire NDRI HDR enrolment, and has supported five placement students since 2022.

Nyanda has been invited to review grants for the Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development, the UK National Institute for Health, NHMRC (Research Policy and Translations, Evidence–based practice/policy gap synopsis 2018), ARC (linkage 2015-) and for VicHealth (2016–).
