Dr Tina Lam is a Research Fellow at the Monash Addiction Research Centre who specialises in conducting policy and practice relevant research that will improve the health of all Australians.

Dr Lam is a chief investigator and the national coordinator for the 'Young Australians Alcohol Reporting System (YAARS)'. YAARS is a National Drug Research Institute (NDRI) project run in collaboration with the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (University of New South Wales), Turning Point (Monash University; VIC), the University of Tasmania, Flinders University (SA), ACT Health, Charles Darwin University (NT), and the University of Queensland. YAARS aims to investigate trends in alcohol use among young people over time to examine risky patterns and influences on alcohol consumption amongst Australian adolescents.

She also currently conducts research on opioid-related harms and trends. Her previous roles have included being the state coordinator for the Client Pathways through Treatment (‘Pathways’) project and the Patron offending and Intoxication in Night Time Entertainment Districts (‘POINTED’) project. Tina's PhD explored alcohol and other drug use at school leavers' celebrations ('Schoolies') which was recognised with a McCusker Centre for Action on Alcohol and Youth award.

Dr Lam contributes to the policy debate at all three levels of government and is regularly quoted on alcohol-related issues in the media. She also contributes to programs aimed at supporting diversity and building equality such as the Science in Australia Gender Equity Athena Swan national program.

  • PhD, National Drug Research Institute, Curtin University
  • Cert Alcohol and Other Drugs Work, Central Institute of Technology
  • BPsych (Hons) Psychology, University of Sydney
  • My research interests include alcohol use, opioid trends, equity, and young people.
