  • Project status: Completed
  • Start date: February 2012
  • Expected end date: August 2014
  • Completion date: September 2014
  • Funded by: ANPHA
  • Lead organisation: Curtin University

The Young Australians Alcohol Reporting System (YAARS) aims to investigate higher risk drinking practices among Australian adolescents.

In 2013 it was trialled in Western Australia, Victoria and New South Wales, with a view to national application thereafter. It combined information from existing data sources with surveys targeting at-risk young people to provide:

  • an early warning system on risky patterns of alcohol consumption, contexts of use and related harms that will also allow tracking of changes in use and harm over time; and,
  • timely information on patterns of use and related problems to inform policy, prevention and treatment initiatives.
YAARS outputs are available from both the 2013 three-state pilot and the 2016-17 national roll-out.
