NDRI Seminar: Alcohol and the health and human rights of women and children
Presented by Dr Anne-Marie Laslett, NDRI Adjunct Senior Research Fellow
Thursday 28 November 2019, 1pm - 2pm
Technology Park, Building 603, Level 2 Seminar Room (Room 213), Sarich Way, Bentley, WA (map)
This seminar presents findings of research that aimed to build understanding of the social and health effects of alcohol on women and children in the ‘Global South’. The research focussed on identifying the impacts of one’s own and others’ drinking on the wellbeing, quality of life and education outcomes of women and children; harms to women’s physical and mental health due to their own and others’ drinking; and violence against women and children due to others’ drinking. Several themes emerged from the research, including harms to adult women, adolescents, children and families; intimate partner and gender-based violence; the impact of drinking (own and others’ drinking) on HIV AIDS; traffic deaths and injuries; and miscellaneous social harms, such as initiating sex work to pay for alcohol, stigma and community impacts.
Anne-Marie Laslett has academic qualifications in global and public health, alcohol-related child maltreatment, dentistry and oral epidemiology, more than 20 years of research experience in the alcohol and drug field, and past public health experience in maternal and child health research and injury prevention. She recently moved from NDRI to take up an ARC Discovery Early Career Researcher Award in May 2019 at the Centre for Alcohol Policy Research, but continues to collaborate closely with NDRI. She has led multi-method research teams and has an international profile in research on alcohol’s harm to others (AHTO), collaborating widely with many countries and the World Health Organization (WHO). She chairs the International Group for the Study of Alcohol’s Harm to Others. Her book, Harm to Others from Drinking: Patterns in Nine Societies was released in Geneva and published by the WHO in June this year.
