  • Completion date: March 2000
  • Funded by: CARG (Commonwealth AIDS Research Grants

The transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) responsible for AIDS is known to be particularly efficient among injecting drug users (IDUs) who share contaminated needles. In this national study data were collected in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Hobart to assess the level of HIV seroprevalence among samples of IDUs drawn from treatment and non-treatment populations. Data were also collected relating to knowledge and attitudes towards AIDS and risky drug using and sexual behaviour. In Perth the study was undertaken in collaboration with the WA Alcohol and Drug Authority. Data from two successive annual waves are being analysed.
