Reflecting on how research can impact policy and practice

Two internationally-respected leaders in alcohol and other drug (AOD) research shared insights and lessons from decades working in the field as part of a special event hosted by the National Drug Research Institute (NDRI) at Curtin University.

Former NDRI Director Professor Steve Allsop and retiring NDARC Director Professor Michael Farrell have both worked in the AOD field in Australia since the 1980s. In this special conversation-style event, How research can improve policy and other responses to AOD: What have we learned - In conversation with Steve Allsop and Michael Farrell, they reflected on how the policy and practice landscape has evolved and shared lessons to inform how we can navigate emerging and future challenges.

The in-person event, facilitated by the Director of Curtin’s enAble Institute Professor Bronwyn Myers, was attended by 75 invited guests.

“This special event was a rare opportunity to access the insights and experiences of two of the most respected and influential leaders in our area of work over the past 50 years,” NDRI Director Professor Paul Griffiths said.

“It was a fitting way to acknowledge their contribution and expertise, while allowing the next generation of researchers to tap into Steve and Mike’s knowledge and experience, and I thank them both for their candour and openness.

“I was also thrilled to announce at the event that Curtin has bestowed the title of Emeritus Professor on Steve in recognition of his outstanding and distinguished contribution to the University.”
