NDRI researcher elected president of prestigious society

Internationally-respected alcohol researcher Michael Livingston has been elected the next president of the international Kettil Bruun Society for Social and Epidemiological Research on Alcohol.

Formed in 1987, the society (KBS) aims to promote social and epidemiological research that fosters understanding of the social aspects of alcohol use and alcohol problems. It also aims to promote a spirit of international cooperation.

Michael, who was named as president-elect at the recent 2025 KBS symposium in Scotland, will shadow the current president before officially taking on the role at the Berlin symposium in 2027.

Only the third Australian-based researcher to be elected to the role, Michael is joined on the KBS executive by Melbourne-based NDRI colleague Dr Nic Taylor, who was elected to the KBS Organising Committee.

Associate Professor of alcohol research at the National Drug Research Institute (NDRI) at Curtin University, Michael has worked in the alcohol epidemiology and public health area since 2006. He has attended annual KBS meetings since 2007 and was instrumental in attracting and organising the 2024 KBS international symposium in Perth in 2024.

“It is a real joy and privilege to take on the role of KBS president,” Michael said. “KBS has been a driving force for collaborations and friendships across my career, as it has for so many members, and the KBS community has really been so critical to my entire professional life.”
