Aims of the summit include the following:

Discuss ways of moving forward in this area by developing a nationally agreed framework;

Identify the policy and research needs with regard to smoking in prisons of state and territory departments of health and corrective services;

Share current initiatives to reduce tobacco smoking among prisoners;

Identify key areas requiring research in this area that can guide evidence-based policy, and;

Produce a national report of activities, policies, research and agreed principles on tobacco control in prisons.
