A program has been initiated in Fremantle entitled 'Freo Respects You' which aims to encourage Fremantle licensees to develop policies and practices which will reduce the probability of their customers experiencing alcohol related problems. A central part of the program is a training course for staff involved in the sale of alcohol. While this training is delivered jointly by the WA Hotels' and Hospitality Association's Training Officer and a Police Officer from the Liquor and Gaming Squad, the project is a collaborative venture between these two organisations, the National Centre for Research into the Prevention of Drug Abuse, the WA Alcohol and Drug Authority and the Liquor Licensing Division of the Office of Racing and Gaming. Evaluation of the project is the special responsibility of the National Centre and essentially involves 'before' and 'after' assessments of each establishment in comparison with another entertainment area in Perth which is not receiving intervention. Detailed assessments will be performed of each establishment's policies and practices (eg. pricing of low alcohol drinks, discount schemes, availability of food, etc.), knowledge and attitudes of bar staff, serving practices of bar staff, drinking patterns of patrons, blood alcohol levels attained by patrons by the time they exit and measures of their subsequent involvement in drink-driving offences, traffic accidents and assaults.
