Professor Paul Griffiths was appointed in February 2025 as Director of the National Drug Research Institute (NDRI) located in Perth, Australia. He has worked for nearly 40 years in the drug and alcohol field. Prior to 1999, at the National Addiction Centre (NAC) in London, UK, his academic work focused on drug risk behaviours. He also represented the UK on the Council of Europe’s Pompidou Group expert committee on drug epidemiology, and he was involved in capacity-building programmes in applicant countries to the European Union (EU). In 1999, he joined the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Vienna, Austria, where his responsibilities included the development of a global capacity-building programme. In 2002, he joined the European Monitoring Centre on Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) as head of the epidemiology unit, and in 2005, he was appointed Scientific Director with responsibility for guiding the agency's scientific activities. This included the developmental scientific work necessary for the launch of the European Union Drug Agency (EUDA) in 2024. He has been an active member of EU agencies' network of senior scientific advisors (EU-ANSA) and until recently chaired the group's cluster on foresight and future studies. In 2012, Professor Griffiths received an international award for excellence in leadership in the addictions field from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA, USA). He has served as co-chair of the programme committee for all editions of the Lisbon Addictions series of international conferences and was instrumental in establishing this event. He has held an honorary senior lectureship in Addictions at the Department of Psychiatry, King's College London, since 2013.
