The social costs and harms of alcohol consumption in the Northern Territory (NT) equate to $1.38 billion annually. The NT has the highest rates of alcohol consumption in Australia, and accordingly experiences the highest levels of alcohol-related harm. These harms are experienced across some of Australia’s most remote and disadvantaged communities.

Consequently, a wide array of policy measures aimed at reducing alcohol-consumption and related harms have been deployed in the NT. These vary from local interventions such as the ban on cask wine sales in Alice Springs, universal policies such as the alcohol floor price, or targeted approaches such as the Banned Drinks Register.

Alcohol policy change is frequent within the NT, as such many policies and initiatives overlap or conflict in their approach to reducing alcohol-related harm.

Facilitated by NDRI Professor Tanya Chikritzhs, this webinar will discuss the challenges associated with regulating, measuring and reducing alcohol-related harm in the NT. Sarah Clifford of Menzies School of Health Research, Stephanie Holmes from the Association of Alcohol and Other Drug Agencies NT, and Nicholas Taylor from NDRI will each give brief presentations discussing the challenges in this space.
