Abstract:

We live in an increasingly uncertain world. In response to this, the use of Foresight methods has become recognised as a highly valued approach for more effective engagement with stakeholders, to inform policy development and strategic planning exercises, and to increase organisation and sector resilience and preparedness to future events.

In NDRI’s July webinar, hear firsthand insights into how using Foresight methods has increased EU agencies’ ability to prepare for and rapidly respond to new public health challenges in the area of illicit drugs and communicable disease, and take part in a discussion on the possible lessons we can learn from the European experience on how we can be better prepared in Australia to respond effectively to future health challenges.

Presentations:

Dr. Gerjon Ikink - Principal Expert Policy Coordination, Strategy and Impact, European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC)
This presentation will briefly introduce what foresight is and how it can be useful for organisations, using recent work in the ECDC as an example of an elaborate strategic foresight initiative. That multi-method approach aimed to strengthen ECDC’s resilience and preparedness by mapping plausible future scenarios and identifying actions to prepare for future public health challenges and meet emerging threats.

Klaudia Palczak - Team leader for Research, Innovation and Foresight, European Union Drugs Agency (EUDA)
This presentation will briefly describe the context, objectives, and impact of the foresight activities undertaken by the EUDA in the drug field over the past five years. It will focus on key foresight projects that apply horizon scanning and scenario development to inform the EU’s drug policy and research agendas.

Brian Galvin - Head of Irish National Focal Point to EUDA, Health Research Board Ireland
The presentation will describe foresight exercises undertaken with stakeholders in Ireland, the work of the EC-funded DRUG PREP project and efforts to promote foresight as a policy innovation in IE.
