International report examines alcohol and blood pressure

NDRI Alcohol Policy Research Program Leader Professor Tanya Chikritzhs has co-authored a ground-breaking new report on the link between alcohol, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease.

Alcohol and Blood Pressure summarises the best scientific research and provides a state-of-the-art overview of alcohol’s substantial causal role in hypertension, the leading cause of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and dementia.

Authored by medical and public health researchers from Canada, Australia, United States, and Sweden, the report concludes that there is strong evidence alcohol use leads directly to elevated blood pressure in the short-term and hypertension in the longer term, without any safe level or protective effects.
