NDRI Director to help steer international drug strategy
NDRI Director Professor Paul Griffiths has been appointed to a high-level government steering group overseeing the development of a new National Drugs Strategy (NDS) for Ireland.
Professor Griffiths, who attended the inaugural steering group meeting in July, joined Curtin’s National Drug Research Institute as Director in February 2025 following almost 15 years as Scientific Director at the European Union Drug Agency.
As well as international experts, membership of the Irish National Drugs Strategy steering group is drawn from government departments, the Health Service Executive, Health Research Board and civil society, including those with lived experience.
The group, which is chaired Dr Sarah Morton and will convene until December 2025, will provide expert opinion and oversee the drafting of a successor national drugs strategy as well as a two-year action plan to support its delivery. Its work will be informed by stakeholder consultation, findings from a Citizens’ Assembly on Drug Use, an independent evaluation of the current strategy, and the EU drugs strategy and action plan.
