Blog: Minimum Unit Price removed in Northern Territory

The majority of evidence indicates that the Minimum Unit Price (MUP) improved health outcomes and decreased violence in the Northern Territory, according to NDRI alcohol researcher Nic Taylor.

In a blog piece for the Institute of Alcohol Studies, Dr Taylor argues the removal of the MUP on March 1 had more to do with party politics than evidence.

"The narrative pushed...to justify removal of the MUP is not based on evidence and given the evidence available, the repeal can largely be attributed to the politicisation of alcohol policy," Dr Taylor writes in the piece, which was co-written with Dr Cassandra Wright, from the Menzies School of Health Research.

"MUP remains a highly effective and cost-effective measure to reduce alcohol harm, which policymakers can design to reduce harms targeting drinkers and beverages of concern."
