‘Science at Shine Dome’ celebrates research, science community
NDRI early career researcher William Gilmore was nominated by Curtin University Health Sciences Dean of Research Professor Gavin Periera to attend the Australian Academy of Science’s ‘Science at the Shine Dome 2025’ in Canberra this month.
Here, Dr Gilmore reflects on the annual conference as a special occasion to step outside the ‘daily doing’ and celebrate the contribution researchers and other scientists make to our society:
“I feel very lucky to have been selected to represent Curtin in this rare opportunity to rub shoulders with Australia’s leading scientists,” Dr Gilmore said.
“I was able to spend four days in Canberra for Science at the Shine Dome 2025, the annual event where new Academy Fellows are inducted.
“While the event showcased and celebrated significant careers in science, there was a strong focus on early to mid-career researchers (EMCRs), including providing specific professional development opportunities for EMCRs, which was amazing to see.
“And the opportunity to hear from Australia’s scientific leaders and network with research colleagues from across the country was invaluable.
“Another highlight was seeing Curtin’s very own Dr Natasha Hurley-Walker receiving the mid-career Nancy Millis Medal for her outstanding career to date.
“I came away from the event inspired by the amazing science that Australians are leading and the contribution the research community is making.”
Held in Canberra in September, Science at the Shine Dome brought together hundreds of people from different fields, backgrounds and career stages, in a rare opportunity to establish new networks, learn about cutting-edge Australian research, and gain knowledge and exchange ideas.
