I DANCE SAFER: A multi-sited ethnographic study of drug checking and harm reduction strategies in Electronic Dance Music (EDM) settings
The study is conducted across Victoria (Australia), Portugal, and Slovenia, and explores how drug checking services (also known as ‘pill testing’) and other harm reduction approaches are experienced and delivered within electronic dance music (EDM) festival settings.
This study has been approved by the Curtin Human Research Ethics Committee (Approval number: HRE2026-0251), and is being conducted by Ada Beselia, a PhD candidate at Curtin University (Perth, WA, Australia) and the National Drug Research Institute (Melbourne, Vic, Australia), who is also a long-time festival-goer and an alcohol and other drugs (AOD) researcher. Ada is supervised by A/Prof Monica Barratt, Dr Isabelle Volpe, Dr Kat Daley and Dr Nick Cristiano.
We are seeking EDM attendees who use drug checking services in Victoria (Aus), Portugal and Slovenia for fully confidential interviews and case studies. Participants will be reimbursed for their time.
