During 1994 the COMPARI (Community Mobilisation for the Prevention of Alcohol Related Injury) project completed its third and final full year of operation. Community intervention activities conducted during 1994 fall into the following three broad categories: promotion of safe drinking behaviour; community mobilisation to address alcohol related harm; institutionalisation of COMPARI activities within the community. Many of these activities not only contributed to the reduction of alcohol harm at the local level, but achieved a high profile within the community. This profile fuelled local discussion of alcohol harm and increased awareness of preventive responses. Consequently the final year of COMPARI as a demonstration project proved to be its most vigorous and influential, concluding with a transition to community management and receipt of ongoing funding support from local sources.
