Wednesday 20 May - 11am AWST/1pm AEST

Prohibitionist drug policies have driven the over-representation of people who use drugs in criminal legal systems around the world. For many people who use drugs, involvement with the criminal legal system can erode their health, social and economic status.

"Decriminalisation" is proposed as an alternative response to reducing harms incurred from involvement with the criminal legal system, however the ways by which drugs may be decriminalised vary substantially.

In this webinar, Paul Kelaita (UNSW) will discuss the political implications of debates around decriminalisation and choice of models, particularly as related to police diversion schemes, using examples from NSW, Australia. Caitlin Hughes (Flinders University) will present an international review of models of decriminalisation and related outcomes. Chris Gough (CAHMA) will then discuss the impact of decriminalisation in the ACT.
