There is ample evidence that Australia's population is ageing and growing evidence that the median age of people in treatment for drug dependency is also increasing. Most drug treatment programs are aimed at younger drug users and may not provide the services older drug users need. This review will examine the current literature on older drug users from across the world and recommend the way forward for services for older drug users in Australia.
