The COMPARI project was based on a 'community mobilisation' approach to alcohol related harm and encouraged individuals, groups, and organisations to take an active role in changing the levels and context of alcohol consumption in their community. During its first year of operation (1992/93), COMPARI devoted considerable effort to establishing community support. This approach paid dividends during subsequent years and COMPARI was able to capitalise on the support and goodwill to work alongside the community on a range of harm prevention activities. COMPARI was successful in assisting community groups in the areas of alcohol free events, youth drug use, domestic violence, alcohol use on licensed premises, host responsibility, designated driver programs and responding to development proposals for licensed premises. The project in its original form finished in March 1995 but its strategies have been institutionalised through the local COMPARI Committee which has employed a program co-ordinator to undertake and support health promotion activities aimed at minimising alcohol related harm. Ongoing evaluation of COMPARI will also continue through the Long Term Evaluation of COMPARI (LTEC) project.
